About This Webinar
Presented by Sikyung Yoon of POSCO at the 2026 Emerging Fluidization Applications Workshop, hosted by CPFD Software and KWT Solution Inc. in Daejeon, South Korea.
HyREX is POSCO’s hydrogen reduction ironmaking process, developed to produce iron while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive conventional steelmaking routes. The process uses hydrogen-rich reducing gas and a series of fluidized bed reactors to convert fine iron ore into direct reduced iron. In this presentation, Yoon provides an overview of the HyREX process and discusses the technical challenges involved in its development and commercial scale-up. Topics include iron ore reduction kinetics, fluidization and defluidization behavior, particle size and density changes during reduction, solids handling, gas recycling, pressure balance between connected reactors, distributor and cyclone design, and the storage and transport of high-temperature reduced iron.
The presentation also explores how Barracuda Virtual Reactor is being used to support HyREX development. Techniques described include drag model selection, minimum fluidization velocity and bed pressure-drop validation, and more.
