Description: In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out on a large capacity, pantleg CFB boiler with a unique design that can reduce bed inventory imbalance problems. When an in-bed heat exchanger (IBHX) is placed between the two legs of the CFB, the simulations show that with a proper design, the IBHX can enhance lateral solids transfer between the two legs and compensate for the hydrodynamics-induced spontaneous inventory imbalance. The new design enhances boiler operation and at the same time, allows for flexibilities to accommodate other boiler design requirements.
