About This video
This video shows Barracuda Virtual Reactor® simulation results for the 3D, transient, chemically reacting flows in a chemical looping combustion (CLC) system. The CLC unit uses a metal oxide solid carrier (ilmenite) to combust fuel particles (coal) in insolation from the source of oxygen (O2), producing an exhaust gas primarily composed of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), enabling carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) efforts. The CLC system geometry, consisting of two reactors, a cyclone, a loop seal, and an L-valve, was provided by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) along with operating conditions and material property data. Multiphase CFD simulation using Virtual Reactor™ is an essential tool in the global development and scale-up effort for CLC systems.
