Description: In the present work, numerical studies of the hydrodynamics of gas-solid flow and the drying process have been carried out using the commercially available CPFD Barracuda software package. A comprehensive, three-dimensional numerical model has been developed to simulate coal drying in an impact dryer. Simulations have been performed in an impact dryer of 10 t/h scale for three construction variants on one representative particle-size distribution of Polish coal. For each construction variant, moisture content of the solid phase at the dryer outlet and the average residence times of the particles have been determined as the criteria for choosing optimal dryer construction.
