CPFD Software (Houston, TX) announced that it has entered into a software licensing and services agreement with ACT-ion Battery Technologies (Dallas, TX). ACT-ion Battery Technologies are developing a novel continuous supercritical hydrothermal manufacturing process for coated single crystal (SC) cathode active materials (CAMs) in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory.
ACT-ion aims to utilize simulation and modeling to catalyze the reactor design and optimization of process parameters associated with this high temperature and high-pressure chemical reaction process. CPFD’s Barracuda would provide valuable inputs for ACT-ion to scale-up and commercialize its novel continuous supercritical hydrothermal CAM manufacturing process.
Dr. Jin-Myoung Lim, ACT-ion’s Chief Technology Officer and Venture Technology Manager at Hunt Energy Enterprises, added, “This software would drive cost and time efficiencies and bolster the safety and dependability of our systems, positioning us to rapidly develop and prototype innovative supercritical fluid technologies for cathode active material production. We appreciate the support from the US Department of Energy for this collaborative approach with CPFD Software”.
“CPFD Software are overjoyed to welcome ACT-ion to our global user community,” said Niraj Mehta, Solutions Engineer at CPFD Software. “Using Barracuda Virtual Reactor in the development of their novel process for producing SC CAMs is a new horizon for the software, and we are excited to embark on this journey together. We always appreciate the opportunity to learn from the new perspectives gained by introducing the software into a new domain, and we look forward to setting new milestones in modelling vapor/liquid/solid (VLS) systems and in CAM production.”

About CPFD Software
CPFD Software is advancing multiphase simulation and technology. Our flagship product, Barracuda Virtual Reactor®, is a physics-based engineering software package that simulates the three-dimensional, transient, fluid-particle hydrodynamics, heat balance, and chemical reactions in industrial fluidized bed reactors and other fluid-particle systems.
Virtual Reactor™ enables researchers and engineers working with fluid/particle processes to explore a broad range of ideas, reduce physical testing costs, and minimize development risk, all while accelerating commercialization, scale-up, and overall time to market. For clients who already operate industrial units, Virtual Reactor allows engineers to determine the root cause of underperformance, reduce the risk of changes through virtual testing, and optimize solutions, all while maximizing reliability, uptime, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
The Virtual Reactor technology can be accessed via software licensing, services, or custom collaborative arrangements.
