CPFD Software (Houston, TX) announced that it has entered into a software licensing agreement with Aurora Hydrogen. Aurora Hydrogen is developing a clean hydrogen production technology that utilizes efficient microwave energy without generating any CO2 emissions or consuming water.
Aurora Hydrogen aims to use Barracuda Virtual Reactor to enhance understanding and accelerate technological development of a fluidized bed-based methane pyrolysis pilot plant. The novel hydrogen production technology uses microwave energy to provide heat within the reactor; this heat drives the conversion of methane to hydrogen and solid carbon. This is a complex multi-physics problem involving particle and gas movement and interactions, chemical reactions, and particle heating. Aurora is using Barracuda to assist with the validation of heat transfer and fluidization for this novel pilot project; Barracuda was chosen due to its robust calculation capabilities at large reactor scales.
Dr. Andrew Gillis, Aurora’s Chief Executive Officer, added, “Leveraging sophisticated modeling tools like Barracuda allows Aurora to dramatically increase our technology development pace and reduce costly mistakes in scale up. We’ve appreciated the collaborative approach that Barracuda took in adapting their modelling software to fit our novel process”.
About Aurora Hydrogen
Aurora Hydrogen is developing a clean hydrogen production technology that utilizes efficient microwave energy without generating any CO2 emissions or consuming water. The technology is highly scalable, units can be installed anywhere and can scale from small fueling stations to the largest industrial applications. Hydrogen production using Aurora’s technology has the potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by over 900 million tonnes per year. The company was founded in 2021 and is based in Edmonton, Canada.
