SUMMARY:P‍SRI Guest Webinar: The Importance of Knowing Your Cyclone’s FEC for Process Optimization - April 23rd\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The fractional efficiency curve (FEC) for an operating cyclone is one of the primary metrics that describes how the cyclone is performing. In this presentation we will discuss what the FEC is\, how it is measured\, and how it is utilized in cyclone design. PSRI will also discuss how the FEC not only directly impacts emissions but particle size distributions (PSDs) of the particulate matter in process systems. Many members of PSRI utilize cyclones in processes that utilize fluid beds and other mass circulations of particulate at the heart of those processes. In these types of circulating systems\, the effects of the FEC are magnified resulting in the cyclone acting as primarily a “particle size control” device.

SUMMARY:PSRI - Tracer Webinar\, August 15\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Tracer techniques to Characterize the Gas and Solids Mixing in Fluidized Beds\, a members only webinar. \nThis webinar focuses on the work PSRI has done to quantify the behavior of gases and solids in fluidized bed systems. To track the path of gas\, PSRI uses helium injections at points of interest and uses thermal conductivity detectors to read the concentration of helium at the desired probe locations. For solids\, small amount of the same bed material dyed with fluorescent dye and injected into the system. The illuminating fiber shines UV light on the material and\, if the presence of dyed particles in the measuring volume\, will then emit a light of certain wavelength back to the receiving fiber\, which is received by a photodiode. Both the gas and solid tracers are introduced into the system in small concentrations relative to the system inventory. Currently in the Gas-Solid Contact program\, PSRI is investigating the use of an adsorbing tracer\, carbon dioxide\, and comparing it to the helium tracer\, which is non-adsorbing. The goal of the program is to quantify how efficiently the adsorbing tracer is contacting (adsorbing) to the catalyst\, as well as how the bed behavior affects this contacting.

SUMMARY:PSRI Webinar - Basic Concepts in Fluidization\, May 30\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:PSRI’s Basic Concepts in Fluidization takes place on Tuesday\, May 30\, 2023 at 9:00 AM CDT. \nFluidized bed reactors are widely used in many process industries such as catalytic cracking\, fluid coking\, coal combustion and polyethylene production. This is because of the fluidized bed’s superiority as a gas-solids contacting technique. The basic concepts of the different fluidization regimes\, how they differ and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each will be addressed. Minimum and complete fluidization velocities\, the dominating effect of particle size\, basic distributor and cyclone design\, entrainment and the effect of operating conditions on fluidized beds will be discussed and explained in the webinar.  Register here. \nThis webinar is for PSRI members only.  For more information on PSRI membership\, visit here.

SUMMARY:PSRI - Measuring Fluidized Beds and CFBs - March 16\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Much of what we do at PSRI involves getting quantifiable hydrodynamics from fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds. We do this with over a dozen PSRI tools that provide the data needed for scaling up efforts and process optimization. So how do we do this? How do we measure bubble hydrodynamic properties in a bubbling and turbulent fluidized bed? How do we measure the TDH and the entrainment rate? How do we quantify gas and solid mixing in fluidized beds? How is the cyclone grade efficiency measured? How do we get the radial solids concentration and flux profile in a riser? These are just a few questions that address what PSRI does\, developing quantifiable techniques to see what is happening in industrially relevant fluidized beds\, slurry beds\, ebullated beds\,  circulating fluidized beds\, etc. This webinar will discuss the techniques in our arsenal and where we need to go to answer tomorrow’s challenges. \nThis Members Only webinar will be presented on Wednesday\, March 16th 2022 at 8:00 AM Central Standard (Chicago) time. \nA recording of the webinar will be available 24 hours after the live event has finished. \nPlease make sure you have the latest ZOOM client installed on your device from https://zoom.us/download.

SUMMARY:PSRI - Meet the Consultants Webinar: Dr. Jia Wei Chew February 15\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chew has over 8 years of experience in particle technology\, membrane-based separations\, and machine learning and has over 200 publications. \nDr. Chew brings PSRI world-class technical expertise and skills in: \n\nMechanistic understanding of membrane fouling and mitigation\n\nBecause membrane fouling remains the Achilles’ heel of membrane-based filtration\, studies related to improving understandings of the fouling behavior and correspondingly advancing means of fouling mitigation are widespread. This presentation overviews some research efforts on enhancing mechanistic understandings on the deposition and mitigation of particulate foulants in microfiltration processes.\n\n\nApplication of Machine Leaning Tools to Understand Fluidization Phenomena\n\nAs big-data tools become increasingly popular\, the employment of machine learning tools to advance the understanding of various fluidization phenomena was explored. The key goal was to provide mechanistic insights on various fluidization phenomena\, as well as assess the predictive capability of such trained models that do not require any mechanistic understanding. Snippets of notable findings will be shared.\n\n\n\nThis Webinar will start at 9 AM Central Time and be presented via ZOOM. Please make sure you have the ZOOM client already installed on your device. You can install ZOOM from https://zoom.us/download.  Registration is required. If you are unable to attend the live webinar\, a recording will be available on PSRI.org 24 hours after the completion of the live event.

SUMMARY:PSRI - Webinar: Introduction to WebTools 2.0 June 8\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Over the last several decades\, numerous correlations have been developed at PSRI that predict various hydrodynamic properties in a fluidized bed system\, including the PSRI entrainment correlation\, cyclone design tool\, cyclone pressure drops calculator\, cyclone grade efficiency correlation\, jet penetration lengths correlations\, and tools for grid design.    Many of these correlations have numerous complex calculations valid within a specific range. Some of these features have been available to members\, with limits\, in PSRI’s webtool platform.  Now\, PSRI is introducing webTools 2.0\, which features an improved interface with an interactive user experience that carries out all the complex calculations behind the scenes using PSRI’s new calculation engine. Some of the key features of this new tool are as follows: \n\nAbility to upload and download data and results\,\nSort and search in tables\,\nDrag and drop data sets in a table\,\nIntegrated tools in one single application that makes it easier to navigate between tabs\, and\nInteractive plots – Hover\, zoom in / out\, pan\, etc.\n\nThis webinar will demo the new webtool’s platform and detail all the new features accessible from any modern web browser\, phone\, or tablet. Users will be able to login with their PSRI username and password. \nThis MEMBERS ONLY webinar will be presented on Zoom and will be recorded.  Please download the Zoom client ahead of time by visiting https://zoom.us/download.
