During MERTC 2019, Peter Blaser, Vice President of Engineering Services for CPFD, has been invited to present Simulation as a Tool for Knowledge Management of Lessons Learned from Historical FCCU Operations Wednesday, January 23rd at 10:15 AM as part of Stream B: Digitalisation Technologies.
Deep technical knowledge of FCCU operations often resides in the experiences of a small, declining number of subject matter experts. Simulation has been shown to identify root causes of underperformance, test the effects of potential changes prior to implementation, highlight areas for additional optimization and minimize the risk of unforeseen negative consequences of changes. However, a lesser explored aspect of simulation is simulation as a tool to capture lessons learned from current and historical operations as a step toward digital knowledge management. Multiple case studies will be presented from global refiners who have used simulation to understand and mitigate issues such as erosion, emissions, afterburn, and catalyst losses. Simulation results and historical operational data from cases utilizing operational data from two or more turnaround cycles are emphasized and analyzed to capture and retain lessons learned, both positive and negative. Recommendations for refiners seeking to digitally manage historical knowledge are provided.
